Come to the Omak PAC this September for a special multimedia music-dance theater performance featuring lead dancer/choreographer Jayanthi Raman and ensemble dancers from Portland and India. Jayanthi Raman is an iconic dancer, choreographer, and master artist. Her new show DEVI, which translates to "Goddess" in the Sanskrit language, features dancers performing graceful Bharatha Natyam and the athletic Chau classical dance from Delhi, India.
The dance production takes us on a journey through India's vast and rich cultural heritage. The production endeavors to illuminate the paradox of femininity by skillfully navigating the blurred boundaries between the revered figure of the Goddess and the lived experiences of present day women.
Jayanthi Raman Dance Company productions are exceptionally professional with elaborate costuming, music, dance, and multimedia elements incorporated in a stunningly beautiful manner. JRDC is the only Indian Dance Company in the Northwest presenting professional dancers and musicians in major productions and on local and national tours. The dance company and academy enhance cultural diversity by bringing Indian classical dance of highest quality through performances and outreach events influencing the cultural scene. Jayanthi’s artistry, mentorship, and advocacy continue to improve the accessibility, vitality, and appreciation of traditional arts. Reputed as 'world class' and 'breathtaking' by the regional and national press, the dream team of exceptional dancers perform to original music score, performing classical, folk and theatrical dances from India.
“Few dancers communicate effectively across the wide gulfs of cultural difference. Jayanthi Raman is one. Even a viewer conditioned by American culture can recognize what sets Raman’s dancing apart. Technique, expressiveness, acting ability, musicality – just as in a ballet.” – The Oregonian
